In 1900 the archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans (1851-1941) discovered a large number of clay tablets inscribed with mysterious symbols at Knossos on Crete. This linear B tablet was excavated at Bronze Age Pylos by Carl Blegen between 1939 and 1952 and is on display at the Chora Museum of Archaeology, Greece. Unearthed at modern day Ano Englianos, Blegen called the remains of a large Mycenean palace found there the Palace of Nestor", after the Homeric poems, and dated it to 1300 BC. Linear B tablets found by Blegen clearly demonstrate that the site itself was called Pylos by its Mycenaean inhabitants. Linear B was eventually deciphered by Michael Ventris, an English linguist and architect. This tablet contains economic and administrative records from the Kingdom of Pylos."
