Description
Hurricane Ivan, water vapour satellite image. The eye of Hurricane Ivan hitting Alabama, USA, on 16th September 2004 at 0715 GMT. On the right is Florida. The colours on the image relate to the amount of water vapour (cloud thickness). Purple is the greatest through red, pink, yellow and blue to black, which indicates a clear sky. Data such as this can be used to predict a storm's behaviour. At the time this image was taken Ivan was classified as a category 5 hurricane and it covered an area of 640 kilometres along the American coast. Ivan is the sixth strongest storm to ever hit the Atlantic basin. Image taken by the NOAA-12 weather satellite.
