Description
Oil well fire. Firefighters from the Kuwait Oil Company's Kuwait Wild Well Killers (KWWK) sheltering behind metal shields as they guide a boom (far right) to a blazing oil well. This is in the Rumeilah Oil Field in southern Iraq. The oil wells were set alight by Iraqi troops as they retreated from the invading coalition forces in March 2003. At the end of the boom is a stinger", which pumps drilling mud into the well at high pressure. This extinguishes the flames and stops the flow of oil, allowing the well to be put back under control. Photographed in March 2003."
