Artist's Description
New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, on 31 August 2005. Aerial photograph of a flooded part of New Orleans. New Orleans is a city on the US Gulf coast that was hit by Hurricane Katrina on 29 August 2005. Soon afterwards, the rise in water levels breached the levees that held back the waters of Lake Pontchartrain to the north. Although large numbers fled the city before the hurricane hit, many thousands remained and many thousands died, both in New Orleans and along the coast to the east, in one of the worst natural disasters in US history.
