Wright Flyer. Take-off of the world's first powered flight on 17 December 1903. Orville Wright is piloting the aircraft while lying on the lower wing (centre) and his brother, Wilbur, who had been steadying the aircraft is at centre right. The flight lasted 12 seconds. It travelled 36.6 metres from the end of the take-off rail (across centre), at an altitude of 3 metres and an airspeed of 10. 9 kilometres/hour. Photographed at Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA.
