Description
Lily flower bud. Light micrograph of a section through a pollen sac from an anther of a lily (Lilium sp.) flower bud, showing mature pollen grains (dark). The male stamens are arranged in two whorls of three, known as the androecium (not shown). The anthers, on the ends of the stamens, have four pollen sacs, within which the diploid sporophyte pollen grains have undergone meiosis to form the haploid gameteophyte. The lining of the pollen sac, the tapetum (dark ring), has cells that nourish the pollen grains. Magnification: x70 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
