Description
'Jerusalem Delivered', 19th-century illustration. This scene of a Saracen sorceress with crusader knights illustrates an epic poem about the 11th-century First Crusade by Italian poet Torquato Tasso (1544-1595). Tasso was an influential poet of the Italian Renaissance. His most important work (illustrated here) was 'Gerusalemme liberata' (1581, 'Jerusalem Delivered'). The poem consists of 20 sections (cantos). This scene is from the fourth canto, showing Armida being presented to one of the leaders of the crusade, Godfrey of Bouillon. Armida was sent to Godfrey's camp to murder a Christian soldier (Rinaldo), but fell in love with him and spirited him away to an enchanted realm. Artwork published in Paris in 1810.
