Description
Brainstem nerve cells. Confocal light micrograph of neurons (nerve cells, green) and glial cells (support cells, red) from the brainstem. The neurons' cytoskeletons have been dyed green. The cytoskeleton is responsible for intracellular transport, cell structure and motility. Neurons are responsible for passing information around the central nervous system (CNS) and from the CNS to the rest of the body. Glial cells provide structural support and protection for neurons and also supply them with nutrients and oxygen. The brainstem controls automatic functions such as breathing and the contraction of the heart.
