Description
Parabolic troughs at a solar power station. A parabolic trough consists of a linear parabolic reflector that concentrates light onto a receiver tube positioned directly above the middle of the mirror. The tube is filled with a working fluid, such as molten salt, which is heated to high temperatures by the focused sunlight, and used as a heat source for a power generation system. Photographed at the Solana Generating Station near Gila Bend, Arizona, USA, which generates a total of 280 megawatts (MW) of energy, from two 140 MW steam turbine generators; enough to power 70,000 homes.
