Artist's Description
Mercury, MESSENGER images. Four hemispherical projections of Mercury, obtained by the MASCS (Mercury Atmosphere and Surface Composition Spectrometer) instrument on the MESSENGER spacecraft. This instrument was designed to study both the exosphere and surface of Mercury, with its Visual and Infrared Spectrometer (VIRS). To accentuate the geological context of the spectral measurements, the MASCS data have been laid over a Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) monochrome mosaic. The MESSENGER (Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging) spacecraft orbited Mercury from March 2011 to April 2015. Images released in 2015.
