Mars, illustration. Mars is the second closed planet to Earth after Venus. It is a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere. It has surface features reminiscent both of impact craters, valleys, deserts and polar ice caps. Mars is the site of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system and valles Marineris, one of the largest canyons in the solar system.
