Artist's Description

Fertilisation. Computer artwork showing an ovum (egg cell, far left), being fertilised by a sperm cell and developing into an embryo (far right). Once fertilised the nuclei of the sperm cell and the ovum fuse to form a zygote (second from left). The zygote then undergoes repeated mitosis (cell division, third from left) to form a cluster of cells known as a morula, which continues to divide to form a blastocyst and then the embryo.
