Description
Facial sinuses. Three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scan of the head showing the sinuses (blue). These are air spaces behind the face. They are lined with a mucous membrane and they lighten the skull and add resonance to the voice. The facial sinuses are seen above the nose, with the maxillary sinuses visible to either side of the nose. CT scans use X-rays to create slice images through the body, which can be combined to give this 3-D view. This allows study of the body's internal structures without using invasive techniques.
