Apollo Soyuz Test Project crew training. Portrait of the Soviet crew of the Apollo Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) during training. The ASTP mission was the first joint international manned space-flight. It took place from 15-24th July 1975. The Russian Soyuz 19 spacecraft, carrying Soviet cosmonauts Alexey Leonov (born 1934) and Valeri Kubasov (1935-2014), docked with the US Apollo CSM-111 spacecraft, carrying US astronauts Thomas Stafford (born 1930), Donald Slayton (1924-1993) and Vance Brand (born 1931), in orbit on 17th July to test a jointly-designed international docking mechanism.
