Artist's Description
Alzheimer's disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of an axial (horizontal) section through the brain of a person with Alzheimer's disease. In this condition there is widespread destruction of brain tissue leading to abnormally deep folding and shrinkage of the brain (pale & mid grey). The two fluid-filled ventricles (dark areas, centre) have become enlarged. The disease leads to memory loss and disorientation, and is the most common cause of senile dementia. The cause of Alzheimer's disease is unknown and there is no cure. MRI scanning uses a magnetic field and a pulse of radio waves to produce slice" images of the body."
