2MASS galaxies, all-sky infrared image. This projection shows the relative brightness and distribution of galaxies over the entire sky, from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS, 1997-2001). Over 1.6 million galaxies were recorded by the 2MASS All-Sky Survey Extended Source Catalog, more than half never catalogued before. Observed at an infrared wavelength of 2.2 microns, the colours range from blue (bright and close) to red (dim and distant). Galactic clusters, superclusters, and streamers make up the large-scale structure. The dark band (middle and around edges) is where our Milky Way galaxy obscures the view.
