Description
Wolf fish eating sea urchin. View of a wolf fish, Anarrhichas lupus, on the sea bed eating a sea urchin. Wolf fish, also known as ocean catfish, are carnivores that feed on hard-shelled molluscs, crustaceans and starfish. They have a bony plate inside the mouth which allows them to easily crush sharp spines (such as the sea urchins'), and calcareous skeletons. They are found at depths of up to 100 metres from the coast of Greenland to southern New England, USA. The fish grow up to 90 cm in length but weigh less than 7 kg. Despite their ferocious nature, wolf fish are reclusive by nature and will usually shy away when approached. Photographed in Nova Scotia, Canada.
