Artist's Description

Vesuvius erupting. Historical artwork of the volcano Vesuvius erupting in the year 1638, from the book Mundus Subterraneus (Subterranean World). Vesuvius is an volcano near Naples in Italy that is famous for its destruction of the Roman cities Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were buried under ash and mud respectively, in 79 AD. Mundus Subterraneus is a treatise on geology written in 1678 by the German Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher (c1601-1680).
