Artist's Description
Uranographia constellations, 1801. This page of this star atlas shows the constellations surrounding the South Celestial Pole (centre). The constellations are groupings of stars in the night sky, here represented by a mixture of contemporary and mythological figures. The most prominent constellations seen here are: Argo Navis (lower right), Horologium Pendulum (lower left), Toucan, Phoenix and Grus (centre left), Indus and Pavo (upper left), Apus Avis (upper centre) and Crux (upper right). Some constellations, such as Centaurus (upper right) are marked without a corresponding drawing. Uranographia was published in 1801 by the German astronomer Johann Elert Bode (1747-1826).
