Artist's Description

Tora Bora, Afghanistan. Satellite image of the White Mountains in east Afghanistan that contain Tora Bora ('black dust'), a fortified encampment with an extensive network of tunnels. The site was originally built by extending natural caves and was for the use of the mugahideen during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan (1979-1988). Following 11 September 2001, it was believed to be the headquarters of the Islamic fundamentalist organisation al-Qaeda and to be the hideout of the organisation's leader, Osama bin Laden. Image taken on 18 October 2001 by Space Imaging's Ikonos satellite.
