Artist's Description

Sunspot AR2192, Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) image. Sunspots are pockets of cool, dark gas which occur in magnetically active regions of the Sun, often in groups. This sunspot has a diameter of around 130,000 kilometres, around ten times that of the Earth. AR2192 was the largest sunspot of this solar cycle. The SDO is an Earth-orbiting spacecraft launched in 2010 by NASA and used to observe the Sun. Image obtained on 23 October 2014, as a Quick-Look Continuum view from the HMI (Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager) instrument. HMI Continuum (Intensitygram) images show the solar surface in visible light (the photosphere). This is a flattened intensitygram. For a close-up of the sunspot, see image C035/6558.
