Artist's Description

Sodium acetate. Molecular models of sodium acetate dissolved in water (left) and as a solid (right). When a solution of sodium acetate is cooled below its melting point it crystallises and forms a solid. This is an exothermic, or heat-producing, reaction, resulting in a warm clear crystal known as hot ice.
