Small intestine villus, fluorescence deconvolution micrograph. Fluorescent dyes have been used to highlight tissues, cellular structures and proteins: f-actin (green), cell nuclei (blue), occludin (red). Villi are the functional structures lining the walls of the intestines. One villus is at centre, with two more either side. Actin is a protein that is a major part of a cell's cytoskeleton, and one of its forms is filamentous actin (f-actin). The cell nuclei seen here are part of the columnar epithelium that forms the shape of a villus. Occludin is a protein found at cellular joins called tight junctions. This tissue sample is from the illeum section of the small intestine.
