Satellite image of Riyadh (upper centre), the capital city of Saudi Arabia, in 1972. North is at top. At this time the population of the city was 500,000 and increasing rapidly. To the south and west of the city is the Wadi (valley) Hanifa (dark green).The dark green areas at bottom right are irrigated fields. Image obtained by the multispectral scanner (MSS) on the Landsat 1 satellite on 21st April 1972. For images showing the growth of Riyadh from 1979 to 2016 see C036/8226 to C036/8230.
