Artist's Description

Peacock spider, glass sculpture, being held in a person's hand. This sculpture was made by artist Tomek Litwin. This sculpture was made using a blowtorch to heat glass at high temperature (around 800 degrees Celsius). The hot glass can be manipulated into the desired shape. Different coloured glass pieces are used to form the patterns. Litwin attempts to recreate his sculptures as close to real life specimens as possible. The peacock spider (Maratus volans) is a species of jumping spider. The males have highly coloured abdominal flap extensions that are raised during courtship.
