Artist's Description
Mitosis. Digital three-dimensional immunofluoresc- ent light micrograph of a section through a rat kangaroo kidney epithelial cell during the propha- se stage of mitotic cell division. The chromosomes (blue, centre) have condensed and become visible, after replicating during the resting stage: interphase. The actin microfilaments (red) and tubulin microtubules (green) of the cytoskeleton maintain the structure of the cell. The centros- omes (pink dots seen amongst the chromosomes) are microtubule-organizing centres. Mitosis produces two identical daughter cells. Antibodies have been used to attach fluorescent dyes to specific cell tissues. Magnification: x500 at 6x7cm size.
