Artist's Description
Magnetic field experiment. Apparatus for enabling magnetic field lines to be seen in 3D and projected onto a screen. Glycerine and iron filings are placed into a sealed container into which two iron rods are placed. The mix is agitated to ensure an even distribution, and then the poles of a magnet are applied to the rods (top). The iron filings will then align in the pattern seen, and will be preserved when the glycerine sets. A lamp (such as the recently invented light bulb) can then be used to project the magnetic field lines into a screen. Artwork from the third volume (first period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
