Artist's Description
James McKeen Cattell (1860-1944), US psychologist. Cattell carried out his graduate studies in Germany, later becoming the first professor of psychology in the USA, at the University of Pennsylvania. His work helped establish psychology as a science. Cattell later worked at Columbia University, where he was dismissed for opposing US involvement in World War I. He also edited and published journals, including 'Psychological Review', 'Popular Science' and 'The Scientific Monthly'. He was editor of the journal 'Science' for nearly 50 years from 1895 to his death. He was elected President of the American Psychological Association in 1895.
