Description
Human heart from the front showing the major blood vessels (white) and the internal chambers, cutaway anatomical artwork. The heart is a hollow muscular organ that pumps blood around the body. Blood enters the heart at left from the vena cava, and flows from the right atrium (centre left) into the the right ventricle (lower centre), from where it is pumped into the pulmonary artery (upper centre). It then travels to the lungs and back to the heart via the pulmonary vein and left atrium (upper right). From the left atrium the oxygenated blood passes into the left ventricle (lower right) and is pumped round the body through the aortic arch (upper left). The flaps and string-like structures in the chambers and blood vessels are the heart valves.
