Frontonia protist. Differential interference contrast micrograph of the large freshwater ciliate protist Frontonia leucas. Frontonia are capable of ingesting large prey such as diatoms and filamentous algae. Here, several ingested diatoms and blue-green algae can be seen inside the unicellular organism. Magnification: x230 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
