Description
Distillation apparatus. 16th-century illustration of three small distillation vessels. The central stills contain the liquids being distilled, which are heated until the distillate evaporates. The caps on top are the alembics where the distillate condenses and runs down the tubes into the receptacles (green). The furnace providing the heat is across bottom. This is a page from 'Liber de arte distillandi de compositis' (1512), published in Strasbourg by German surgeon and alchemist Hieronymus Brunschwig (c.1450-c.1512). This work is a practical manual on chemical, alchemical, and distillation devices, and techniques used to manufacture potions and drugs.
