Description
Dead Sea, satellite image, 1999. North is at top. The Dead Sea, located on the border between Jordan and Israel, is one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth. At 418 metres below sea level it is also the lowest point on Earth. The main body of the Dead Sea is at the centre of image (dark blue), below it are a complex of Jordanian salt evaporation ponds. The sodium chloride and potassium salts produced by evaporation are used for the chemical industry, salt for food and nutrition and for road de-icing. See image C007/6193 for the Dead Sea from 1989. By 1999, it is clear there has been increased development in the divide between the evaporation ponds and the main body of water.
