Description
Multipolar nerve cell. Computer artwork of a nerve cell (neurone). This multipolar nerve cell has a single long axon seen at lower right. At centre is the cell body containing a rounded nucleus; many dendrites branch from the cell body. The dendrites receive nerve impulses and act as sensory receptors for the cell; the cell's reply is then transmitted through the axon. The cell body is thus the site which processes incoming signals, and which produces a nerve response. Neurones of various types exist but all have a similar structure.
