Artist's Description
Cardiac muscle fibres. Fluorescence deconvolution micrograph of a cross-section through the muscle fibres from a normal heart. Fluorescent dyes have been used to highlight tissues, cellular structures and proteins: cardiac muscle (red), cell nuclei (blue), dystrophin (green). Dystrophin is an important muscle protein that connects the cytoskeleton of a muscle fibre to its surroundings. Deficiency of this protein causes muscular dystrophy. Here, the dystrophin is regular in appearance, as seen in healthy muscle tissue. For the corresponding abnormal image, with disrupted dystrophin as would be seen in a case of muscular dystrophy, see M172/681.
