Artist's Description

Cardiac cell differentiation, fluorescence deconvolution micrograph. Fluorescent dyes have been used to highlight cellular structures and proteins: cardiac actin (green), cell nuclei (blue). Actin is a contractile muscle protein. The two nuclei have formed because the heart cell is differentiating. This is a process where cells change to become more specialised. In adults, the process normally involves adult stem cells dividing to create daugher cells during tissue repair.
