Coloured axial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan through the brain of a 45-year-old woman with high blood pressure who has had a cerebravascular accident (CVA, stroke) at the level of the brainstem. The brainstem is at centre in this image, with the stroke seen as a lesion (white area). The brainstem is vital for basic functions such as breathing and maintaining a regular heartbeat. This is a T2-weighted MRI scan.
