Description
Brainstem nerve cells. Confocal light micrograph of neurons (nerve cells, green) and glial cells (support cells, red) from the brainstem. The neurons' cytoskeletons have been dyed green. The cytoskeleton is responsible for intracellular transport and cell structure and motility. Glial cells provide structural support and protection for neurons and also supply them with nutrients and oxygen. The brainstem controls automatic functions such as breathing and the contraction of the heart.
