Artist's Description
Light micrograph of part of a folium of the cerebellum with the molecular layer (yellow) and the granular layer stained brown-orange. Many fine parallel nerve fibres arising from granular layer neurons are seen at the base of the molecular layer. These excitatory fibres synapse with Purkinje neurons, which themselves are the major inhibitory output nerves from the cerebellum. The nerve fibres investing the Purkinje cell bodies are basket cell interneurons that are inhibitory. Paraffin section, silver stain. Magnification: x 270 when width printed at 10cm.
