Artist's Description

Light microscopy of the cerebellum which is located below and behind the cerebral hemispheres (the forebrain). Anatomically the cerebellum has two hemispheres and developmentally it belongs to the hindbrain. The surface (cortex) of the cerebellum consists of highly folded grey matter (outer yellow and brown) formed into folia that resemble leaves with branches. Each folium contains very many neurons the total number exceeding those found in the cerebrum. The core of folia has white matter extending deep and attached to the brainstem. The cerebellum coordinates movement, posture, and equilibrium. Magnification x40 when printed at 10 cm.
