Artist's Description
1940s polio treatment. Nurses treating a boy with infantile paralysis (polio) using the Kenny method. Hot compresses are applied to the affected limbs, and this is followed by muscular and nervous re-education. This method was developed in the 1930s by the Australian nurse Elizabeth Kenny (1880-1952), and brought to the USA in the 1940s. Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, is a childhood disease caused by a virus. Polio epidemics in the early 20th century left thousands paralysed. Vaccines were developed in the 1950s and 1960s. Photographed in Poston, Arizona, USA.
