On July 8, 1856, about 50 miles south of the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, Capt. A. R. N. Tremearne and the crew of the Princess saw a large fish with a walruslike head and twelve forward-pointing dorsal fins. Someone fired a rifle at the animal, hitting it in the head. The log-book notes 'Tuesday, July 8, 1856. Latitude accurate 34° 56' S.; Longitude accurate 18° 14' E. At one p.m. saw a very large fish, with a head like a walrus, and twelve fins, similar to those in a black fish, but turned the contrary way. The back was from 20 to 30 feet long; also a great length of tail. It is not improbable that this monster has been taken for the great sea-serpent. Fired and hit it near the head with a rifle-ball. At eight, fresh wind and fine.' This is an example of the recurring many finned sea monster" found in several accounts.."
