Description
MODEL RELEASED. Kampo Japanese traditional medicine. Pharmacist preparing prescriptions of kampo medicines from the granulated formulations (white plastic bottles) on the shelves. Kampo originates from Chinese traditional herbal medicine, which was introduced into Japan and became established as a medical system in the 7th century. It includes acupuncture and moxibustion (a therapy utilising the mugwort herb), but is primarily concerned with the study of herbs. Currently 148 kampo formulations have received approval from the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The kampo clinic here is one of only two in Japan, has about 160 outpatients per day and usually houses up to 10 inpatients. Photographed at the Kitasato Institute Hospital, Tokyo, Japan.
