Description
The Alchemist. Artwork of an 18th-century theatrical performance of 'The Alchemist', a comedy by English playwright Ben Jonson (1572-1637). This is Act 2, Scene 6, portrayed by English actors. David Garrick (1717-1779) plays the part of Abel Drugger (lower right). John Palmer (died 1798) is playing the role of Face (centre). William Burton (died 1774) is playing the role of Subtle (left). Alchemical equipment and preparations are arrayed at left. This engraving by the British artist John Dixon (c.1740-1811) was published in 1771. The original artwork was by German artist Johann Zoffany (1733-1810).
