Sydney Brenner, South African-British molecular biologist (1927-2019) lecturing at the Medical Research Council's (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology Cambridge, UK. Brenner rapidly gained qualifications in both medicine & biology and began research in molecular biology at Cambridge. Since 1963 he has been making an in- depth study of the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans. A world-wide project to decode the genome, the genetic blueprint, of this simple multicellular animal (essentially as a dry run to a similar project involving the human genome) has come about largely due to his efforts.
