Description
Scientist feeding mice in the habitation store at the low-dose gamma ray facility of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Tennessee. The boxes along the wall at left are 'habitation modules' for the mice. The scientist is wearing protective clothing as the breed of mice used for these experiments has an inactive immune system; the mice must therefore be kept in sterile conditions. ORNL is investigating the effect of gamma rays in inducing genetic mutation in mice (Mus muscula) over more than 50 generations. The research is intended to provide data for the investigation of radiological exposure on mammals.
