Artist's Description
Star-forming region. Infrared image of RCW 108, a star-forming region in the southern Milky Way. Stars are being born from dense clouds of gas and dust. The bright IRAS 16362-4845 emission nebula (centre) is glowing due to the ionisation of hydrogen by ultraviolet radiation produced from its hot stars. The image is a composite taken by the New Technology Telescope at La Silla, Chile.
