Artist's Description

Springtail's head, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This primitive insect (order Collembola) has remained unchanged for millions of years, and is considered a living fossil. Its antennae (upper right) are the main sensory structures, as its eyes (red, one seen at centre) are small and poorly developed. Most springtails live in leaf litter, feeding on decaying matter. Magnification x30 at 6x7cm size.
