Description
Spinal cord. Light micrograph of a section through a spinal cord from the neck. The spinal cord has a central canal around which are the dorsal and ventral horns (red). These consist of grey matter, made up of neuron cell bodies and their connections (ganglia). Outside the grey matter is the white matter (brown) which consists mainly of long axons of the neurons (nerve cells) which run up and down the spinal cord. The outer membranes (meninges) protect and nourish the spinal cord. The protrusion at top right is the dorsal root ganglion, which contains the cell bodies of sensory neurons. A blood vessel is seen at centre bottom. Magnification: x3 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
