Description
Southampton geothermal heating station, operated by the Southampton Geothermal Heating Company. This heat station (red and blue buildings), part of the Southampton District Energy Scheme, draws hot water from an underlying aquifer to the surface. Hot water is circulated through a network of pipes around much of Southampton city centre to provide heating in civic and commercial buildings (the general principle is known as a district heating system). The scheme began in the 1980s, and has since added other heat sources for warming water including a combined heat and power (CHP) plant fuelled mostly by gas. It is owned and operated by ENGIE in partnership with Southampton City Council. Solar panels (black) are seen on the red building. Photographed in 2018.
