Artist's Description

Sodium burning in water. When water and metallic sodium come into contact they react to form sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. The reaction is exothermic, or heat-producing. Enough heat is generated to melt the sodium and ignite the hydrogen. The flame shows the typical yellow colour of sodium ions. This reaction is characteristic of the Group I elements of the periodic table.
